Rome during the Jubilee is an unforgettable experience. To help you plan your trip as well as possible, here are some tips.
When to go:
- Opening of the Holy Door: The Jubilee will officially begin on 24 December 2024 with the opening of the Holy Door in St Peter’s Basilica. This is the highlight for pilgrims.
- Other events: Throughout the year many Jubilee-related events will be organised, such as themed Jubilees (for example, for the world of communications, the armed forces, etc.). Check the official Jubilee website to stay up to date.
What to see and do:
- The basilicas: As well as St Peter’s, visit the other four papal basilicas: St John Lateran, St Paul Outside the Walls, Santa Maria Maggiore and San Lorenzo Outside the Walls.
- The Stations of the Cross: Take part in one of the many Stations of the Cross organised in the city, an intense spiritual experience.
- The churches: Rome is full of churches, each with its own unique history and art. Visit the ones that interest you most.
- The Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel: A must for every visitor to Rome. Book your tickets in advance to avoid long queues.
- Other sights: Don’t forget to visit the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, Castel Sant’Angelo and the fountains of Rome.
Getting around:
- Metro: The metro is the quickest way to get around the city.
- Buses: Many bus routes connect every part of Rome.
- On foot: Rome is a city made for exploring on foot, especially in the historic centre.
Where to stay:
- Near the Vatican: If you want to be close to the main Jubilee sites, look for accommodation near the Vatican.
- Historic centre: The historic centre offers a wide choice of hotels, B&Bs and apartments.
- Outer districts: If you are on a tight budget, you can look for accommodation in the outer districts and use public transport to reach the centre.
Useful tips:
- Book in advance: Hotels, flights and museum tickets should be booked well in advance, especially if you travel in high season.
- Comfortable clothing: Be ready to walk a lot, so wear comfortable shoes.
- Bring a water bottle: Rome is a hot city, so always carry water with you.
- Respect the rules: In places of worship certain dress codes must be respected.
- Travel insurance: Take out travel insurance that covers any medical expenses or repatriation.
